WHAT IS SEA URCHIN?

Sea urchins are a type of echinoderm. They are scavengers, eating mostly algae. Sea urchins can be found in oceans or tropical waters worldwide. The spines on the sea urchins can grow to 8 inches long and they will protect themselves using their spines if disturbed by predators or when mating.

Sea urchin, also known as uni roe, are great for sushi. Many sushi restaurants serve sea urchin as an appetizer or a nigiri piece with the tapered end used for leverage when eating it.

WHAT DOES SEA URCHIN TASTE LIKE?

Sea urchin, or uni, has a unique texture, yet is similar to caviar in some ways. Uni roe has a buttery texture and mild, briny taste.

If you are eating it raw like sashimi, sea urchin tastes briny, salty, and sweet all at the same time. This taste ranges from mild to very strong with a flavor that varies depending on the species of sea urchin consumed. Cooked dishes will change the flavor profile of sea urchins depending on what ingredients are used.
