Clams are a delicious and versatile seafood option, but if not cleaned properly, they can be gritty and unpleasant. Since clams are filter feeders, they naturally accumulate sand and debris, and that sand needs to be purged before cooking. Follow this simple step-by-step guide on how to clean clams to ensure your clams are fresh, clean, and ready for your next seafood feast.

Instructions: How to Clean Clams

  1. Rinse the Clams: Start by rinsing the clams under cold water to remove any dirt or debris from the shells.
  2. Prepare a Soaking Solution: Fill a large bowl or container with cold water, enough to fully submerge the clams. Add salt (about 1/4 cup of sea salt for every 1 gallon of water) to mimic seawater, which encourages the clams to expel sand.
  3. Soak the Clams: Place the clams in the water and gently stir to make sure they’re all submerged. Let them soak for at least 20-30 minutes, but ideally up to 1-2 hours. The clams will filter the water and release sand during this time.
  4. Change the Water (Optional): If you want to be extra thorough, you can change the water halfway through to ensure they purge all the grit.
  5. Rinse Again: After soaking, give the clams one last rinse under cold water to remove any remaining sand or debris.
  6. Prepare to your liking!

Tips for Purging Clams

  • Check for freshness: After purging and before preparing, discard any clams that remain open when tapped, as they may be dead and unsafe to eat.
  • Don’t agitate the bowl: Agitating the bowl or the water will risk getting the expelled sand back into the clams.
  • Cook soon after purging: Clams are best enjoyed fresh, so plan to cook them soon after cleaning.
